A strategic debt consolidation program can be a great way to reduce your monthly payments and protect your credit rating if you're having hard times staying afloat in today's economy.
Basically, by using a consolidation loan to pay off numerous high-interest credit accounts you will turn those multiple monthly payments into one, lower payment that is more manageable for you; leaving more money in your pocket each month without the risk of defaulting and ruining your credit score.
The downside is that if you are over extended with credit already, it can be hard to acquire a consolidation loan. Many lenders specialize in consolidations though, so shopping around is likely to help you find someone willing to work with you--provided your credit rating is fair.
Another risk with debt consolidation is that once you do it, you suddenly have a ton of free credit available to you with the credit cards and other credit lines you just paid off with the consolidation loan.
For some people, this becomes a temptation to start using those credit accounts again, and all too soon they find themselves maxed out once again, with numerous credit lines to pay on each month plus the consolidation loan payment.
If you use a consolidation program to keep you out of financial trouble, be wise and lock your credit cards away once you've paid them off. Save them for extreme emergencies only and remember that using them comes at a great price.
